"Well, she wrote about driving home from school..." I explained to my admissions colleagues. "How about I put the essay up on the screen so you all can read it." I was a second year admissions officer and presenting a student's case to the admissions committee...

Although the topic was mundane, it was the best essay i read all year. Actually, all of my favorite college admissions essays were about everyday things. This made me wonder why so many students tried to do write an essay meant to "impress the admissions reader." Essays about "Superman or Superwoman" moments focus on success and achievement rather than individual growth and character traits of the students. They don't say much about how a student will contribute will contribute to a college community.

The best and most effective essays tell stories of defining moments. The good news for students is that EVERY student has experienced these universal moments.
